Authorities say a more than 100-vehicle pileup in whiteout conditions has closed part of a major interstate along the Columbia River near Portland, Oregon.

The high risk of mudslides prompted evacuation orders Thursday for some Los Angeles neighborhoods ravaged by recent wildfires as the strongest atmospheric river of the season brought downpours, strong winds and flooding to much of California.
