Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. has launched a bidding process for dozens of new widebody aircraft, according to people familiar with the matter, pitting Airbus SE against Boeing Co. in what would be a multibillion-dollar deal.

Cathay Pacific has tapped both Airbus and Boeing, requesting their proposals for the airline’s next aircraft order. The airline is considering the Airbus A350 or Boeing 787 family, along with the possibility of adding more Boeing 777Xs to its fleet.
