Investigators say a former detective in Kansas left five suicide letters before fatally shooting himself ahead of a trial in which he was accused of sexually assaulting women for decades.

The largest recruiting class for the Police Department this decade is part of an ongoing effort to bring the department to full employment. On Monday, nearly all of the 41 new officers were filling out paperwork at KCPD Headquarters downtown.

The legislation heard in the Missouri legislature would place the St. Louis police department under a governor-appointed board, similar to the Civil War-era system that runs the Kansas City Police Department.
