Staff from the New England Wildlife Center is caring for more than a dozen geese and ducks impacted by an oil spill in the Muddy River in Brookline.

The wildlife center has detailed their treatment protocol, explaining that their immediate priority has been to "clear airways and flush oil from the eyes and mouth, and provide heat support." The organization notes that the washing process for each bird takes an hour.

An oil spill was detected on the Muddy River in Boston Sunday afternoon, police said, leaving some animals residing on the river coated in oil. On Sunday, Brookline Police said in a Facebook post that officers were dispatched to calls of a possible oil leak around noon.
