Dec 18, 2017 · It is a case of clear improvement; HMV engineers launched the 5A which was an English version of the no. 5 (orthophonic) which sounded the same, but later they continued experimenting and finally launched the 5B, a definite upgrade of the boomy 5A. The 5B lasted many years, while the 5A is much scarcer.

Dec 4, 2024 · The L shaped slot on the Victrola VV-IX does seem to be fractionally longer (but only 0.1mm or so) than the one on the HMV 162, which seems to be enough to stop the pin on the UK soundboxes moving into the other part of the slot when the soundbox is rotated.

Jan 12, 2025 · I can only speak for the UK where the 101 survives in large numbers, being HMV's best selling portable. Try searching the "Sold" listings on UK eBay. There are wide variations in condition and in prices achieved. As a general rule, coloured examples (catalogued from 1927 onwards) make more than black ones.

Jun 14, 2020 · I can see from an old ebay posting (image 3) that it was once indeed whole but strangely had both the lid and the tone-arm-board winding handle clips - which, assuming that the clips in the lid were original, suggests that the innards in this image are not original to the case, which also possibly explains why someone had to drill a second hole ...

May 3, 2012 · After inspecting inside of the cabinet, I was surprised by the well-made HMV 426 motor (the original grease used might be different kind as it has not hardened) and HMV No.4 reproducer (the gasket is still good). To my ears, the No.4 reproducer sounds even better than the No.5A on my HMV No.145. Of course, the 5A I have is not in its best shape.

Dec 28, 2015 · This is my first HMV, and I've always wanted one, but they are scarce here in the US. My favorites have been my Columbia Viva Tonal 160, a Japanese Columbia (Nipponophone), and two nice Telefunken portables from the late 30's. This HMV 102 seems to have had very little use, and I'm looking forward to hearing how it sounds.

Jan 15, 2009 · The HMV type was a single piece of circular rubber with a groove in the centre for the diaphragm to rest in. The Ron Sitko type are supplied as two loose rings for front and back of mica. They are good but personally I prefer using the Exhibition method instead.
